The Bay View Association holds close to 500 Victorian cottages and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1987. Queen Anne, Eastlake, Stick and Shingle, with sweeping verandas and turrets. In 2012 the Paint Quality Institute named it one of America’s Prettiest Painted Places. That is a standard you inherit when you take a brush to a cottage there, not one you set.

The difficulty is not the colour choice, it is holding a true line where two of them meet, forty times across one elevation, at the top of a ladder. When is the painting season in Northern Michigan?
Short, and earlier-booked than downstate. Between the late thaw and the first hard frost there is a limited window when exterior coatings cure properly here. Exterior work gets booked against that window, the honest answer to "can you fit us in this summer" depends heavily on when you ask.
Can you handle a four- or five-color Victorian scheme?

Yes, and the shoulder seasons are ideal for it. Interiors run in spring before the season opens or in fall after it closes, in a conditioned building with nobody living around the work, so the cottage is simply ready the day the family walks in.

The same crew, a different specification. Newer Petoskey stock runs to stained and clad exteriors rather than painted Victorians, and the northern exposure rules still apply. Short season, hard weather, honest scheduling. We treat new and old as the different jobs they are.
