Color Consultation & Finish Design, Metro Detroit

Palettes developed for your rooms and your light.

Colour behaves differently in every house. North light in a Grosse Pointe living room is cool and flat, and the same white that looked warm in the store will read grey on the wall by three in the afternoon. We develop palettes in the actual rooms, at the hours you actually use them. The result is a house that reads as one deliberate composition, and a written schedule that keeps it that way through every future repaint. Good color is not found; it is tested.

Tested in your own light

We put large sample boards on your walls and look at them morning and evening before anything is committed. A chip held against a wall tells you almost nothing; a two-foot board in situ tells you everything.

Sheen is a decision too

Sheen determines how a colour reads and how a wall cleans. A flat ceiling, a matte living room and a scrubbable eggshell hallway can all be the same colour and behave like three different ones.

Flow between rooms

Rooms are seen through doorways, not one at a time. We work the palette as a whole so the transitions are deliberate rather than a series of individually reasonable choices that fight in the hall.

You leave with a document, not a mood

The finished consultation is a written schedule: every room, every surface, the exact color by name and number, the sheen, and the notes on where each decision came from. It survives repaints, guides the next project, and means the answer to “what white is the trim?” is on paper forever instead of in anyone’s memory.

Common questions

What does a color consultation actually include?

A walkthrough of the rooms at the hours you use them, palette development against your furnishings, stone and floors, large painted sample boards on your own walls, and a written schedule. Every surface, every color, every sheen. It becomes the specification the painting is done to.

Why sample boards instead of the little chips?

Because a two-inch chip cannot tell you what a wall will do. Color shifts with the size of the surface and the light falling on it, the same white reads warm at noon and grey at four. A two-foot board, moved around the room over a day, tells you the truth before a gallon is bought.

How many colors should a whole house have?

Fewer than most people start with. Rooms are seen through doorways, and a palette that flows, a family of related colors with deliberate moments of contrast, makes a house feel composed rather than decorated. We work the whole sequence, hall to room to room, not one swatch at a time.

Do you consult on exterior color too?

Yes, and exteriors are where mistakes cost the most to change. An exterior palette answers fixed things, roof color, brick, stone, the neighbours, before taste gets a vote. We sample outside on the actual elevations, in sun and in shade, because exterior light doubles the intensity of everything.
