Precision prep work

Michigan weather is hard on a finish. Freeze-thaw cycling opens seams, lake humidity lifts poorly bonded coatings, and a wet spring shortens the exterior season to a narrow window. We wash, scrape, sand, caulk and prime for those conditions rather than painting over them, which is why our exteriors hold their edge through the winters that strip other work back.

Designer-grade finishes

We work in Fine Paints of Europe, Benjamin Moore and ML Campbell. They cost more per gallon and they hold their depth of colour and their sheen far longer, which makes them cheaper across the life of the finish.

A home you can still live in

Spotless drop cloths, sealed-off work areas, daily clean-up, and crews who work around your household rather than through it. You get the house back every evening.

Two coats, and why we will not sell you one

A single finish coat over primer looks acceptable on day one and thin by year two. Coverage is not the same thing as film build, and film build is what weathers, scrubs and holds its color. Every finish we quote is a full two-coat system over the right primer. It is not an upsell; it is the difference between paint and a paint job.

Common questions

How often does a Michigan exterior need repainting?

Exposure decides it, not age. South and west elevations take the worst UV, and anything facing open water takes driven rain on top of it. A properly prepped repaint in the coatings we use holds its edge for years; a builder-grade job over minimal prep can start failing in three. When one elevation goes early, recoat it early. Letting it peel drags the rest of the finish down with it.

Do you use low-VOC paints indoors?

Yes. The designer-grade lines we work in are low- or zero-VOC, which matters most in an occupied house and in winter, when interior work happens with the windows shut. Rooms are usable again quickly, and the house never takes on that solvent smell for a week.

When should I book exterior work?

Ahead of the season, not inside it. Exterior coatings need warm, dry weather to cure, and the Michigan window is finite. Shorter still in Northern Michigan. The calendar fills in order of booking, so the calls that come in February get the good slots and the calls that come in July get what is left. Interiors run all year, which makes winter the quiet, well-scheduled time to do them.

Do we need to move out while you paint?

No. We seal off the work area, keep drop cloths spotless, clean up daily, and phase whole-home projects room by room so you always have your house. Most clients are surprised how little they notice us, which is the point.

What does “meticulous prep” actually include?

By substrate: washing and deglossing where coatings are sound, scraping and sanding back where they are not, wood repair where rot has started, caulk cut out and renewed rather than layered, and the primer matched to what is actually underneath. Bare wood, chalky old paint, plaster and previously-glossy trim all want different ones. It is roughly two-thirds of the hours on a good job, and all of the difference.
