Victorians are trim before they are walls
Rochester keeps an unusually intact older core. The downtown district runs about six blocks of Main Street and holds late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century architecture that most towns this size lost decades ago, including the 1849 Rollin Sprague cobblestone building and an 1890 Richardsonian Romanesque opera house block. The residential streets behind it kept their character too.

The Walnut Boulevard houses and their neighbours carry porches, brackets, spindlework and banks of sash. On a house like that the body colour is the easy decision and the trim is the entire job. Most of the hours go into cutting in, and that is where the result is won or lost.
Craftsman wants honesty, not decoration
The Craftsman houses near downtown were built around exposed structure. Beams, brackets, wide casing, box columns. They read badly when the woodwork disappears under an opaque coat it was never meant to carry. Often the right answer is to bring the wood back rather than to paint it out.
Two kinds of house, one town
Move out toward Rochester Hills and the stock turns newer and larger. Drywall, bigger volumes, more cabinetry. We price and prep those as the different jobs they are rather than carrying one approach across the whole area.
A town that watches its buildings
Somewhere that has kept this much of its downtown intact tends to notice what happens to a facade on a main street. Colour choices on the older houses are worth making with that in mind, and we are happy to work to what a district expects rather than against it.

How do you approach a multi-color Victorian exterior?
As a trim job with a body color attached. Most of the hours on a house like that go into cutting in, brackets, spindles, sash, porch ceilings, and that is where the result is won. We map the scheme surface by surface before pricing it, so the estimate reflects the real work.
Do you handle the older downtown-adjacent houses differently?
Yes. They get the old-house treatment: more repair, more surface correction, coatings chosen for wood that has been painted for a century. The prep on an 1890s house is the majority of the job, and pricing it any other way leads to corners being cut mid-project.
Do you also work out toward Rochester Hills?
We do. The newer, larger stock out that way is a different job, drywall instead of plaster, bigger volumes, more cabinetry, and we bid it as what it is rather than carrying one price across two different kinds of house.
Can you keep our house's original colors?
Usually, yes. Removing a switch plate or easing back a piece of trim exposes coats the sun never faded, and we match from that evidence. A house that has looked right on its street for a century is worth trusting over a trend.
What about the garage or carriage house?
Do it with the house. The outbuildings behind these older properties read as part of the composition from the street, and a crisp house against a peeling garage undoes half the effect. Scoped together, the addition is modest; scoped later, it is a second mobilisation.
