Light framing, lively walls
A summer cottage was framed for summer. The structure flexes with wind off the bay and with the deep freeze-thaw cycle, and its plaster shows that as recurring cracks at openings and along ceiling lines. Repairs here get reinforced as a rule, not as an upgrade. An unreinforced fill in a moving cottage wall is an annual appointment.
The unheated winter is the real enemy
A cottage closed from October to June swings from damp fall to deep-frozen winter to wet spring with no conditioning at all. That cycle pumps moisture through plaster and pops fills that were done in rigid material. We repair with the movement in mind and, where owners can, recommend even minimal winter heat, the cheapest plaster preservation there is.
Spring is the season for this work
The right time to repair cottage plaster is after the building has thawed and dried and before the family arrives. Late spring. The walls are at their true resting position, the repairs cure in a conditioned building, and the paint goes over them in the same visit. One trip, whole rooms done.
The calcimine problem
Many cottage ceilings up here were originally coated in calcimine. A glue-and-chalk finish nothing modern will bond to. Paint applied over it peels in sheets, sometimes years later, and every repaint adds another doomed layer. The fix is unglamorous: wash and seal the calcimine properly, then build a finish that can actually hold.

Common, and worth taking seriously. Recurring ceiling cracks in an old cottage can mean failing keys overhead, and ceiling plaster falls without much warning once it lets go. Have it looked at before it is redecorated over again.

Almost certainly calcimine underneath, the classic Bay View-era ceiling problem. It is fixable, but by preparation rather than by another coat of paint; see above, and stop repainting it until the ground is dealt with.
The walls are charmingly wavy. Do repairs flatten them?
Not unless you ask. A cottage wall's gentle roll is its history, and a laser-flat repair in the middle of it looks like a transplant. We stabilise and repair to the wall's own character. Sound, solid and true to itself, not renovated into anonymity.
